How to Choose the Right Paint Finish?
After you have chosen
the perfect paint colour for your space there is the decision on what finish to
choose. Paint comes in six different finishes knowing the benefits of each
finish will help you choose the right finish for the job.
Flat or Matte
Flat enamel is paint with a matte finish or no sheen once dry. Flat paint is great for hiding imperfection that you may have in your walls and is always recommended for ceilings. I find flat paint has a truer color with more deepness to the tone. Flat paint is best used in room with less traffic because of its porous texture which traps dirt and stains making them harder to clean.
Eggshell
Picture the sheen on an actual egg this is how eggshell finish will appear. Eggshell has a slight sheen to it making it a great choice for wall that need a bit more cleaning in higher traffic areas such as living rooms and hallways. Egg shell has good colour saturation like flat and can be wiped without changing its texture.
Satin
Satin finish has a glossy look to it and is commonly used for windows, doors and trim. It is also suitable for kitchens, bathroom and kids rooms, areas with high humidity or where walls can get wet. Satin finish can hold up to cleaning and light scrubbing.
Semi Gloss
Semi gloss is also used for doors and trims as well as cabinets in kitchens and bathrooms. It is very easy to clean but proper wall preparation is needed because of its high sheen all imperfection will show.
High Gloss
High gloss has the most sheen of all the finishes and is used for cabinets, trim and furniture.
Choosing a paint finish is personal prefers just remember the more sheen a paint has the more imperfection it will show.
